HOW TO REQUEST CITY OPERA's APPEARANCE AT YOUR SCHOOL:

First, call us at 213.925.8598 to see if we are able to accomodate your school's scheduling needs this year.

Second, if your school is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, download a copy of the Reservation Request form at the District's Online Management of Arts Resources (OMAR) website. Click here: Login to OMAR
. (Principal's email and school location code required to login.) Or, if you cannont access OMAR, or your school is a member of a different school district, just download the form directly from our site. Right-click your mouse here and select "save as" to begin downloading the form to the selected directory in your computer now. Note: if your school is eligible for a "Freebie" service from the District, there's no need to worry about the Reservation Request Form. Simply call the Arts Education Branch and tell them you've chosen City Opera.

Third, fill out the form and email (sean@cityopera.net) or fax (213.226.4646) the form to Sean Bradley, our program director, as soon as possible. Before service delivery, eligibility for your school's participation will be confirmed by Veena Bassinger of the Arts Education Branch at the District's offices downtown.

THE PROGRAM STARTS HERE:


A 1-hour to 2-hour planning luncheon with City Opera's program director.

THEN SELECT ONE OF EACH:


Professional Development Workshops (1 to 2 hours).

This is a sample of only some of the workshops we've presented: 

  • using rhythm in your curriculum and daily classroom activities with Carole Zeitlin Adeyemi of Yoruba House
  • staging a dramatic music production with director Courtney Selan
  • incorporating Open Court reading themes into student composed vocal lyrics with Michelle Bourque
  • Producer's Club—using hip hop recording opportunities to motivate underperforming students with Gerry V, a.k.a. The Mad Scientist
  • the composer as storyteller—exploring the relationship between words and music with Dr. Daniel Catan
  • all about the College Board's Advance Placement Music Theory Exam with Sean Bradley

Some subjects can be combined. Other subjects available on request and as needed.


Artist-Residencies (10 hours total)

  • direct classroom support to facilitate teacher-led program implementation (writing lesson plans, rehearsals, concert-prep, etc.)

  • administrative support for school-wide program development (student recruitment, instrument acquisition, etc.)


School-wide Performances/Demonstrations (two 45-minute assemblies)

  • any ensemble from the CITY OPERA roster of concert artists (subject to availability)


NOTES:


All educational content is tailored to your school's specific teacher and student needs, and is:

  • standards-based

  • interdisciplinary

  • culturally relevant and responsive

  • flexible and differentiated

All services are delivered on-site. Professional development workshops may occur during "banking days". Artist residencies may be broken up over time or may occur in conviently scheduled blocks of time.

COST:


$4,475 per site. Besides APS allocations, other funds eligible for this program include:

  • Title I Funds

  • PTA Funds

  • "Other Categorical" Funds

  • School Improvement Funds

  • Student Body Funds

     

RESTRICTIONS:

  • All K-12 schools within the L.A. Unified School District are eligible. 
  • Subject to availability. CITY OPERA intends to service a maximum of 25 schools for the 2005-2006 academic year.
  • Charter schools and not participating in LAUSD's Arts Community Partnership Network may elect to receive individual program components, customized program offerings, and separate pricing.  Call for details.
